175 years of German railways
The first railway in Germany opened between Nürnberg and Fürth in 1835 with a trip by Der Adler (The Eagle) and a rake of basic passenger cars over the 17 km. It doesn't seem so long ago that the 150th anniversary was being celebrated in 1985 with numerous special trains plus a giant parade of locomotives and railcars. Nürnberg (Nuremberg) is also where the main German railway museum is located.
This year marks 175 years of railways in Germany so more, albeit less extensive, events have been underway. Books about German railways are in our online shop.
