A news item from the USA which reflects the differences in attitudes between New Zealand's "Roadfather" Steven Joyce, who would close a 28 mile (45 km) line like this in a flash, and the US Federal Government.
CHADRON, Neb. — Nebraska Northwestern Railroad has been awarded a $4.9 million grant to rehabilitate its Chadron-Crawford, Neb., route. The grant comes under the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery portion of the 2009 economic stimulus package. The money will help pay for a $6.1 million upgrade of the railroad’s route and bridges, including its yard at Chadron. The route was historically part of Chicago & North Western’s “Cowboy Line,” but has been in a poor state of repair for decades. NNW took over the 28-mile route from Canadian Pacific last year.
