goodbye Borders

It was signalled several months ago, but on Tuesday it was confirmed: Borders in America will be sold to a liquidation group; all of its stores are closing, and 10,700 employees will be out of work.

In NZ it was part of the sale of the stores of [in the] REDgroup; the stores have been amalgamated with the nearby Whitcoulls stores, with the name gone.

It seems that despite only having three stores in NZ, [in the] REDgroup for some inexplicable reason in large measure adopted the disastrous attitudes and strategy of Borders which in turn were responsible for its own demise.

Much more unfortunate, however, was the impact that Borders' constant big discount coupons had on nearby good bookstores, particularly the defunct Dymocks in Wellington. A sorry end to a sorry saga, thank goodness it's now over.
