the Fløibanen, Bergen, Norway

a 1950s postcard
This is a metre-gauge, 850-metre long funicular which climbs 300 metres in altitude from its starting point to provide great views over Bergen and surrounds.  Accordingly it is very popular with tourists.  Construction began in 1914 and was complete by 1918, and it opened on 15 January that year.

Two cars, each with room for approximately 80 passengers, operate between the centre of Bergen and Fløyen throughout the year. Each car is named and individually painted - Blåmann (blue man) and Rødhette (equivalent to Little Red Riding Hood in English).

Like everything in Norway, the ride is relatively dear: 70 kroner (NZ$ 15.50 / US$ 12.50) for an adult, 35 kroner for a child.
