the Sydney tram system today

Actually it is a light rail line which runs from the Sydney Central Railway Station to the inner western suburb of Lilyfield, a route of 7.2 km (4.5 miles). Of this 1.5 km (0.93 miles) involves street operation and the rest is on railway track (which is actually heavy rail standard). There are 14 stops, the most patronised of which is that for the Star casino.

Most of the alignment of the Metro Light Rail's Central to Lilyfield line had its origins as the Darling Harbour Goods Line constructed between the Sydney Railway Station (the predecessor to Central Railway Station) and Darling Harbour, which opened on 26 September 1855. This line was extended to Dulwich Hill via Lilyfield in 1922. The light rail line was opened to Wentworth Park in 1997 and extended to Lilyfield in 2000.

In the Geoff Churchman pic above, a tram has reached the top of the ramp to Central Station from Hay Street and is crossing Eddy Avenue.
