the 'Nieuw Amsterdam II'

A passenger liner owned by the Holland America Line between 1938 and 1974 depicted here by artist Stephen Card (one of several paintings by him commissioned by the HAL) making her first-ever transit of the Panama Canal on 17 March 1939.  At the time this was a highly prestigious ship and attracted the patronage of celebrities.  Like nearly all such liners, however, she was impressed into troop ship service during World War 2.  As most people know, Nieuw Amsterdam was the original name for New York and is the name of a recent luxury liner built by HAL in 2010.
