'The Jewel' locomotive, Peru, 1869


The translation of La Joya. According to the text this 2-2-0 type was built by Rogers Locomotive Works for a mountain line in Peru with a 3.8% grade over 30 miles (50 km) and could carry 10 or more men on the tanks on each side and was also intended to pull a 4-wheel car with tools and materials for track repairs. It states it was run for 50 miles in an hour and a quarter, i.e. an average 40 mph.
