steam loco almost off the wharf into the sea

A well-known photo (in NZ rail enthusiast circles) by Percy Godber of 0-6-4T single Fairlie steam locomotive R 28 overhanging Lyttelton wharf on 23 March 1907. It was operating the Christchurch-Lyttelton "boat train" when it overran the stop-block on Lyttelton wharf. Some of the driving frame wheels and drive gear fell into the water as can be seen.  Nevertheless, it was restored and still exists as a static display in a park in Reefton. For more, see our books.
