Muslims shoot police officer outside Mohammed cartoon contest in Texas; get shot

Two gunmen were killed after opening fire outside a controversial Dallas-area event Sunday evening where organizers were holding a contest for cartoons featuring the Muslim prophet Muhammad, police said.

A police officer was initially reported shot at the scene, but further details were not immediately available on his or her condition.

The suspects, who were both armed, were shot and killed after Garland police officers returned fire, city officials said. Officials evacuated the area over fears the suspects' vehicle might contain an explosive. The event, led by prominent conservatives who are critical of Islam, was ending when two males drove up in a car and began shooting at a police officer outside, according to a statement posted on Facebook by the city of Garland, a suburb about 20 from Dallas.

The event was called the Jihad Watch Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest. It was organized by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, which is led by Pamela Geller, a well known conservative political personality who has been critical of Islam.
