from the old days when Otago and Southland had railway networks

The orientation isn't as normal to the north, but has been rotated about 30 degrees clockwise.  Bluff to Dunedin still exists, plus the short Port Chalmers branch and the Otago Central as far as Middlemarch, but the rest is history.  For lots more see our books.
