Hallingskeid Station, Norway

The station in 1909 the year after it was opened. (Norwegian Museum of Cultural History)

This is a mountain station on the Bergensbanen at 1,110 metres (3,640 ft) altitude, inside a wood shelter tunnel which was subsequently built after the station was opened because of the heavy snows.  There have been 4 fires inside the tunnel; one in 1960 destroyed the station and it was rebuilt.  Another fire on on 16 June 2011 destroyed both the tunnel and a long distance class 73 electric train, which could not escape the fire because the power had gone. The cost of this incident was put at 250 million kroner (about $US 35 million).
