Like New York, London is a city whose mayor gets more international attention than is usually the case with local government politicians.
The major political parties contest the mayoralty like parliamentary elections, with the two front-runners always the Conservative and Labour candidates. The incumbent Conservative party mayor Boris Johnson is not standing for re-election and his hopeful successor is 41-year-old Zac Goldsmith - website - who is an environmentalist and currently MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston. The Labour candidate is a Muslim who will get a lot of votes from the city's now huge Muslim population.
Electors who don't think the Conservatives are doing enough about the accordingly big Muslim problem have the option of Britain First's Paul Golding. He has no chance of winning, but will focus attention on the issues. Facebook page
